KYA Kentucky Youth Assembly - December
2011
DeSales sent 14 students to the KYA Assembly in December.
At the assembly they wrote a Bill to amend current cancer
research laws (written and presented by Andrew Hurt, Ryan
Stevens, and Tyler Rucker) which passed both the House and
Senate almost unanimously. Due to discrepancies between
state and federal laws, the Bill was vetoed by the Assembly’s
Governor. The team worked hard to get enough votes to
overturn the veto but fell just short on the last day.
The team received the following awards:
-
Best New Delegation - an award for
the positive contribution and success our students have had
after only been participating for less than a year in YMCA
events.
-
Delegation of Excellence - an award
given to delegations who got all their paperwork in on time,
conducted themselves respectfully, and did not have any
disciplinary issues or controversies during the convention
-
Tyler Olges - outstanding delegate
award
-
Cameron Brothers - outstanding
speaking award
-
Andrew Hurt - outstanding speaking
award
