On September 8th, DeSales proudly introduced alumnus Don Bowers '81 as the school's new Athletic Director. He succeeds former AD Sam Gilbert, who stepped down during the summer.
Don inherits an athletics program that experienced one of its strongest years in recent memory. In 2014-15, DeSales was the only school in Louisville to advance to a region final in baseball, basketball, football and soccer, with football following through with its second consecutive state championship.
Don is excited about the challenge of the new position, but also feels blessed for the opportunity to return to his alma mater.
"It's like a homecoming for me," he said. "As much as things have changed over the years, it still seems like the same family I had when I was a student here. It's great to go to games and see friends and classmates from years ago."
He pointed out the anticipation that is building among students, parents and alumni as the school gets ready to break ground on a new athletics complex. With Phase 1 of the construction work nearly completed, the campus has already undergone quite a bit of transformation.
"I look forward to seeing an athletic facility at DeSales next year that will bring together the community in a powerful, new way. The numerous benefits that it will provide to current and future DeSales students will be hard to measure."
Don played varsity baseball at DeSales and went on to earn a bachelors degree in accounting from Bellarmine University. He spent the last eight years at Holy Cross as Director of Finance. His brother, Eddie, is a 1983 graduate of DeSales.
Welcome back, Don!
