Shilo Rayburn has been named the new head soccer coach at DeSales High School.
A 1997 graduate, Rayburn acted as an assistant coach at DeSales from 1999-2008. He went on to serve as an assistant for the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Spalding University before taking the reins of the women’s team in 2012. Under Rayburn's direction, the Golden Eagles have posted a winning record in conference play each of the last four seasons and have gone 21-10-4 overall since 2015.
In 2014, Rayburn also took on the head coaching position at Doss High School, helping resurrect a program that had been winless over the previous five years. In just his second season, the Dragons finished runner-up at districts and earned a berth in the Sixth Region tournament.
Rayburn will take over the position at DeSales vacated when head coach Aaron Gottbrath ’06 stepped down at the end of last season. In five years at the helm, Gottbrath guided the Colts to a 54-32-7 record, claiming district titles in 2013-2014. In both seasons, the Colts advanced all of the way to the regional final, falling just short of a trip to the state tournament. Gottbrath now serves as assistant principal at DeSales.
Rayburn will remain in his position as head coach for the Spalding women’s team.
“I am excited to take over a program with so much tradition that has experienced a lot of success in recent years,” Rayburn said. “DeSales is where my heart is, so I jumped at the opportunity to get back there and be a part of the great things happening at the school. I look forward to meeting with the team and can’t wait to get started.”
